Holiday time is right around the corner. It’s already the end of November and you never got around to your fall cleaning – not yet anyway – and time is running out. For that matter, you never did spring cleaning either. Your thoughts are pre-occupied with the upcoming holidays and the preparations you need to make along with the warm thoughts of visiting with friends and relatives. You don’t have time to think about cleaning your windows and dusting baseboards.
While spring is generally the time that people associate with cleaning, it’s not too late to have a thorough cleaning done. Let’s face it: if your mother-in-law is coming over, it doesn’t matter what time of year it is, you need your house meticulously cleaned.
You will be delighted to know that you will actually get more from a thorough cleaning now than if the cleaning were done in the spring. Fall is by far the best time to clean. The concept of spring cleaning came about during the times when homes were closed up as tightly as they could be for winter, and sources of heating were dirty fuels such as coal, wood, and oil - all of which left soot and other residue covering in the home. Back in the day, it made sense to clean the rugs, bedding and draperies by taking them outside to beat them ridding them of the soot and ash that accumulated over the winter. This had to be done when the weather was nice so the items could be washed and hung to dry. Once that was done, the walls, ceilings and floors would be washed from top to bottom; and lastly the windows were cleaned. Hence spring cleaning…
